BEGINNING JEWELRY MAKING TECHNIQUES

Adults and teens over 16. Learn the basics of jewelry making and metalsmithing. This class will focus on fabricating jewelry by using hand tools. Students will start with wire and sheet metal and have the opportunity to finish with a piece of jewelry. Learn to use an assortment of hand tools including jeweler’s saws, files and hammers as well as the basics of soldering, polishing, stone setting and surface embellishment. Recommended for beginning and intermediate skill levels. All supplies, and some silver, are provided. Stones and gold are not provided, but stones will be available for purchase.

ADVANCED JEWELRY MAKING TECHNIQUES

Mondays, September 14 - November 16 7:00 - 10:00 PM

This is a continuation of class for those students who have taken Jewelry Making Techniques before, and who are becoming fairly proficient in the basics of sawing, soldering, forming, and surface embellishment. All supplies, including silver, will be provided. Stones and gold will not be provided, but stones will be available for purchase.

Punches of varying sizes and shapes are used to stretch the metal and push it into the pitch, which is just soft enough to give, but resilient enough to maintain support for the metal as it moves. Copper and silver will be provided; tool steel and pitch should be acquired ahead of time.
